Selecting a quality learning center
Children who receive early high-quality care show more advanced language skills, and benefit socially, emotionally and cognitively. When looking for a quality learning center, choose a place where teachers spend one-on-one time verbally interacting with children. The center should stress organization, but also creativity, and provide an environment where they feel safe and secure. Some key characteristics to look for when choosing a quality care center are: - Small Class Sizes: The fewer children in the classroom, the better.
- Safety: Health and nutritional policies should be outlined and comply with government regulations.
- Relationships: Stable, nurturing caregivers should feel like a second family.
- Parents: Parents should be partners in decisions regarding their child.
- Teachers: Caregivers and instructors should enjoy what they do and be well-trained.
- Care: Adults should respect children’s schedules and individual personalities.
- Materials: Toys and books should be developmentally appropriate.
- Sensitivity: The center should be respectful of the parent’s culture and language.
When searching for a center:
- Ask friends, relatives and neighbors for recommendations on facilities.
- Visit and check classrooms, toilets, kitchen and play areas before enrolling your child.
- Talk to the director, teachers and other parents to learn more about the center.
- Verify it is licensed, and make sure the staff has undergone required health exams, medical tests and criminal background checks.
- Ask what the hours are, and what languages are spoken.
- Confirm children can be given medicine, and find out how medical and other emergencies are handled.
